Clear Lake Shores is an island with small island charm and big city conveniences. It was originally a small fishing village in the 1920's. The homes were quaint with wraparound porches.
The land was originally purchased and subdivided into 20x100 foot lots. With the start of the Great Depression the development slowed tremendously. In the 1930s the Houston Post offered lots in Clear Lake Shores for $69.50 with the purchase of a six-month subscription to the newspaper. People bought the lots and built summer homes. Clear Lake Shores started growing again. In 1936 it was even shown on the Galveston County highway maps! After WWII water facilities were installed and people started building permanent homes as well as summer homes or weekend retreats. Clear Lake Shores incorporated on November 13, 1962 and as the community grew, many of the original houses were enlarged or remodeled. Today most of the lots have been combined into 2 and 3 lots. New homes are being built all over the island. In 2000 the city had 1,205 residents.
Clear Lake Shores is primarily a residential community. It has 3 waterfront parks to enjoy. When driving through Clear Lake Shores, you see many residents driving around the island in a golf cart. The City Hall is up on stilts and looks like a dance hall. There are many events held there including turkey dinners and soup cook-offs. Every Christmas you can sit along the water and watch the annual Christmas boat parade. This community is very close knit and a wonderful, fun community. During one hurricane when the electricity was out, the police chief went from house to house to pick up thawing meat for a citywide barbecue!!
Though it is primarily a residential community, it does have 4 major marinas that call Clear Lake Shores home. One being the largest privately owned marinas in the US. The US Senate calls Clear Lake Shores the "Yachting capital of Texas" since there are more boat slips than people!! The community also has some great restaurants as well as a local pub.
It is a major water bird sanctuary and habitat for water related animals, with small piers for fishing, crabbing and pathways for strolling and bird watching.
Clear Lake Shores is a great place to call home.
